Experts teach you how to choose seedling substrate

The seedling substrate is the raw material that provides nutrition and energy to the seedlings when they germinate. It specifically provides the seedlings with the trace elements required for nutrition, and plays a role in helping growth, retaining water and fertilizer. At present, the seedling substrate has a huge market. Whether it is the production of vegetables or flower seedlings, the seedling substrate is a key factor in the production of high-quality products. So how to choose the seedling substrate?

Xinjiang Zhenguanda Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. recently accepted a case of seedling death due to unqualified seedling substrates. The company’s appraisal staff Cai Zhichang (agricultural technology extension researcher), Zhao Guirong (senior agronomist), and Wen Jiangrong (agronomist) The three people formed an identification group. The total salt content reached 4.1g/kg through the detection of the net bag seedling substrate. According to my country's soil salinization grading standard, when the total soil salt content exceeds 0.3%, the crops will be harmed by salinity. The total salt content of the seedling substrate in this identification reached 4.1g/kg (0.41%), which has reached the standard for weakly saline soil. It is more harmful to crops.

So how to choose a seedling substrate? Cai Zhichang, an agricultural technology extension researcher, introduced: When selecting seedling substrates, the following criteria should be followed:

1. Consider from the perspective of ecological environment. The seedling substrate is required to basically contain no live germs, insect eggs, and no or as little harmful substances as possible to prevent it from polluting the environment and food chain after entering the growing field with the seedlings. In order to meet this standard, the seedling substrate should be fermented quickly with a starter to achieve the purpose of sterilization, disinfection, and removal of eggs.

2. The seedling substrate should have a function similar to that of soil. In terms of nutrient conditions and growth environment, substrates are more conducive to plant growth than soil. But it still needs to have other functions of the soil, such as facilitating root entanglement (in order to lump) and better water retention.

3. It is better to prepare organic and inorganic composite substrates for seedling cultivation. When preparing seedling substrates, attention should be paid to the scientific and reasonable combination of organic and inorganic substrates to better regulate the aeration, moisture and nutritional status of the seedling substrates.

4. Choose to use light substrates with abundant local resources and low prices. When applying plug seedling technology, how to choose a seedling substrate is the primary issue related to seedling cost and seedling quality. Under normal circumstances, it is necessary to fully excavate and utilize local light substrate resources suitable for plug seedlings to reduce the cost of seedling substrates, thereby reducing the selling price of plug seedlings. According to the actual situation in various places, low-cost substrates such as carbonized rice husk, cottonseed husk, sawdust, vermiculite, perlite, etc. are selected as plug seedling substrates.
