According to a study published this week by the Journal of Gene and Development, a certain rice gene can simultaneously regulate the yield of this crop and its resistance to a bacterial disease. Dr. Wang Shiping, the head of the study and a professor at Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, China, said that this discovery can help scientists develop more productive rice while also being able to better withstand bacterial diseases. This bacterial disease known as leaf blight is one of the most destructive bacterial diseases of rice. This newly discovered gene has both positive and negative effects. The most common form of this gene makes rice more susceptible to bacterial blight, but it also causes rice to produce more pollen. Wang Shiping said that one way for scientists to maximize the benefits of the gene is to suppress its expression in leaves and enhance its expression in rice flowers. In another study published this month, Zhu Liping, the head of the Institute of Genetics and Crop Development at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, conducted a genetically modified rice treatment that could protect rice against rice blast, the most important rice disease. Rice blast is caused by a pathogenic fungus called Magnaporthe grisea. Zhu Lihuang’s research group used a local rice seed to genetically modify rice to enable it to withstand 156 rice blast fungus strains in China and Japan. The study was published on the website of The Plant Journal on May 4th.
