A scientific research team in China announced on the 27th that it has developed the world's first clinical full-digital "positron emission tomography" ("PET") for the whole body, which can accurately detect the smallest size lesions and significantly advance the cancer discovery time.
The result comes from the development and application of the ultra-high-resolution PET of the first national major scientific instrument and equipment development project of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. It was completed by the researcher of Wuhan Optoelectronics National Laboratory (Chairman) and the professor of Life Science of Huazhong University of Science and Technology Xie Qingguo.
PET is a cutting-edge medical imaging technology after ultrasound, CT and nuclear magnetic resonance. It is mainly used in the diagnosis of major diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and nervous system diseases.
Xie Qingguo introduced that “All Digital PET†is a new generation of medical imaging technology with a full set of core intellectual property rights in China. It has both accurate sampling and all-digital features. It has been approved for 81 international and domestic invention patents. The device has entered the stage of registration of innovative high-end medical instruments, and will soon be put into clinical application.
The reporter saw that the machine was similar in appearance to general PET equipment. However, Xie Qingguo introduced that the machine consists of more than 300 all-digital PET detection modules with a spatial resolution of 2.2 mm, nearly double the highest level of current imported equipment. At the same time, it takes only 5 minutes for the patient to complete the whole body test, which is half the time of the traditional device.
Biomedicine and high-performance medical devices are the key areas in the top ten areas of Made in China 2025. According to reports, the "all-digital PET" independently developed by China has become the trend of the industry. International giants such as Siemens, Philips, and General Electric of the United States have followed suit to launch or deploy their digital PET products.
