3D printed bioglass that can replace cartilage

A few days ago, British scientists developed a material that mimics cartilage and possibly stimulates it to re-grow. Cartilage is a soft, conjoined tissue between the joint and the spine that is difficult to repair after being damaged.

In the computer animation below, the research team showed how a stent was implanted behind the knee to stimulate the re-growth of the chondrocytes and cure the damaged cartilage:

Researchers from Imperial College London and Milano-Bicocca University have developed a bioglass material that mimics the shock absorption and load-bearing properties of true cartilage tissue. It can express different characteristics through specific recipes. Scientists hope to use it to develop implants to replace damaged cartilage discs between vertebrae.

In the video below, the researchers showed their cushioning properties by bounce bioglass products on their desks, a feature similar to the way cartilage cushions our bones.
