Abdominal braces are widely used to increase the stability of the spine. But how does the application of abdominal braces affect the execution of exercise? There is no relevant research on this issue. Because landing is a common task in the exercise process, it is very important to clearly determine how the abdominal braces will affect the completion of the landing task.
In order to quantitatively determine the effects of abdominal braces on the kinematics of the landing process (the angles of flexion peaks of the ankle, knee, hip and local lumbar spine) and the peak of the vertical reaction force, Campbell et al. from Curtin University of Australia designed the relevant research and The findings were published in the April 2016 issue of J Orthop Sports Phys Ther.
The investigators included 16 healthy adults, 7 of whom were women and 9 were men. In the process of the subject completing the landing task, the researchers applied three-dimensional motion analysis, electromyography and baroreceptor platform, and the completion of the landing task was performed twice, one subject needs to wear the abdominal brace, and the other time does not need to wear. .
The abdominal brace worn by the subject provides real-time EMG feedback to the internal oblique muscle. The researchers also quantitatively analyzed the kinematic parameters of the lower extremities and lumbar vertebrae, the peak anti-force, the normalized electromyogram of the left and right oblique internal oblique muscles and the lumbar multi-fissure muscle.
Vertical reaction force, left and right abdominal oblique muscle myoelectric activity changes in three stages of landing (wearing / not wearing brace)
In the process of landing, if the abdominal brace is worn, the knee and hip joint buckling can be significantly reduced, and the vertical reaction force can be increased. However, the wearing of the abdominal brace does not have a significant effect on the electromyogram of the lumbar multi-fissure muscle or the kinematic parameters of the lumbar spine.
The results of this study indicate that the application of abdominal abutments can reduce the impact of landing during landing, which can reduce the risk of lower limb and lumbar injury during landing.
