How to deal with calving peaks?

I. Use breeding records to calculate the peak of calving

According to the breeding records, we can accurately calculate the specific number of calving heads at least 6 months in advance. For example, one of my clients is preparing to welcome 104 yaks in February. This is the lowest number of calves that can be foreseen in the entire ranch in 2012.

Also in this ranch, the number of confirmed calving in June was close to 200. Because of the use of sexually controlled freeze-thawing, taking into account the proportion of males and females and the success rate of production, the number of females estimated to be between 108 and 112 in June. The facilities and staffing of this ranch are only enough to deal with calving from 15 to 17 pigs per week. What can be seen now is 26 to 28 heads per week. How to deal with it?

Anyone who has had yak breeding experience knows the concept of "system overload." For example, in the above ranch, the number of calves produced is much larger than the standard load of the entire yak raising system. According to my experience, in the first week of calving peaks, yaks can still be well cared for. Waiting from the second week onwards, due to the lack of personnel to care for newborn yaks, insufficient space for yaks, insufficient feeding manpower, shortage of manpower and time for inspection and treatment of sick calves, lack of timely replacement of litter, and immunization and chamfering workload. Big and so on, the people couldn’t cope but they started to walk.

From the delivery room to the entire yak farm, all work began to be discounted, resulting in an increase in diarrhea and pneumonia requiring treatment. At this time, more time has shifted from doing a good job to treating calves. Mortality rose and weight gain decreased.

Second, actively respond to the peak of calving, do not get through

1. Understand your enemies by looking at the breeding records, calculate the peak time of calving or the arrival of the “yak tsunami”.

2. Develop a response plan. Choose between reducing the amount of calves and adding other resources, or choose an appropriate combination between the two.

Third, reduce the amount of calves

● Find someone to raise extra calves on behalf of others. Several of my clients have set thresholds for their own ranch yaks. When the number of yaks exceeds the critical value, the excess calves are sent to the yak raising farm.

● Sell extra calves. The first method is to sell excess yak directly after the calf's birth. In the second method, young cows with low potential for production are sold by consulting pedigrees before the young cows are calving.

Fourth, increase other resources

● Under suitable climatic conditions, it is possible to open up the fence outdoors to breed the cows to be produced. My client moved the perinatal cattle into the ranch in June, so that in July there was a very clean calving environment.

● If you do not have enough time to collect, treat, or refrigerate colostrum, colostrum hygiene cannot be guaranteed, then using colostrum powder is a good choice.

● Before the onset of calving peaks, calves are fed to calves of other departments to sterilize colostrum, disinfect the umbilical cord, play ear tags, and feed regular milk, water, and granular materials. Once staffing is insufficient, they can be temporarily called.

● Temporary workers are hired but it is best not to work as a newborn yak nurse and colostrum.

● Use all available places to house extra calves. I have seen customers use haylofts, garages, and even when the weather is good, set up temporary barnyards under the shade of trees.

● Find a suitable veterinarian to sign a contract to ensure timely vaccine immunization and dehorning.

● Review all yak standard feeding management procedures. If problems are found in this process, all employees are retrained before the peak of calving occurs to ensure that calves receive proper care during peak calving.
