Radiologists can diagnose breast cancer in half a second

Release date: 2016-09-01

New research shows that trained radiologists can identify abnormal mammography images in half a second.

Test the United States and British researchers demonstrated that experienced radiologists have the ability to quickly identify a breast X-ray image of a trace.

The study authors say that radiologists can evaluate a real mammography image in such a short period of time, which indicates that some features of breast cancer can be quickly identified by radiologists.

Corresponding author Jeremy Wolfe said radiologists may have some intuition after seeing the first image of the mammography. We find that these intuitions are based on what actually exists in the image. This is amazing. In a blink of an eye, experts can find something unusual in the molybdenum target.

Wolfe is the director of the Visual Attention Laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a professor of ophthalmology and radiology at Harvard Medical School.

Not only that, but they can find abnormal conditions from the other side of the breast, and the other side of the breast has no lesions.

Findings, published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" of August 29.

These results suggest that something on the surface of the normal breast may be abnormal and detectable. Overall, these results suggest that radiologists may find it earlier, while the overall signal that is not normal at this time is still unknown.

Defining this signal may be instructive for developing imaging tools and improving medical training.
