Russian scientists have developed a new type of tumor detector

Release date: 2013-02-18

A group of Russian scientists working at the European Nuclear Research Organization, the High Energy Physics Laboratory, developed a detector that can successfully detect and treat the smallest tumors in the early stages of cancer. For its own full function, it is the first in the world.
A small device like a fountain pen has been involved in realistic surgery. In the nuclear medicine that treats cancer, the newly developed detectors are not the same. For example, a rare cancer, a neuroendocrine tumor, has a total size of 5 mm. It's actually impossible to find it, let alone touch it. But with new instruments, this has become a reality. It turned out that tumor cells were labeled with a special radioisotope. At the same time, radioactive drugs only gradually increase on tumor cells. They begin to radiate. The instrument captures this radiation during surgery to help the doctor completely remove all tumors. The possibility of recurrence of the disease is completely ruled out.
In the interview with the Voice of Russia, Evgeny Grigoryev, head of the new research and development team of the Russian Nuclear Research Organization and head of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, said that the development of the detector The technique developed for the discovery of particles by the Large Hadron Collider was used in the process.
He said: "This technology is based on the counting principle, which is different from the integral principle based on similar products developed decades ago. The advantage of the new instrument is that it is highly sensitive - every particle is not let go. In order to get a high enough signal for the instrument to find it, a larger number of particles are needed if the integration principle is used. Our instruments are extremely sensitive and do not need such a requirement."
Another obvious advantage of the detectors developed by Russian scientists is its price. The US detector is worth 50,000 euros, while the new detectors are worth only a few dozen instead of thousands of euros. This allows the instrument to actually become a one-off. As the Swiss medical staff test shows, it is versatile and more complete than the United States. With it, it can heal rare diseases and improve the quality of surgery, Yevgeny Grigoryev pointed out.
He said: "The surgeon can remove the tumor and all the metastases around it more effectively in a shorter period of time. Our preliminary clinical trials have shown that sometimes such instruments can be prevented from being seen in positron emission tomography. The spread of tiny tumors."
Currently, cancer detectors are only used in laboratories, only a few dozen, for clinical trials. “The patent will be applied afterwards, which will allow us to start selling in other countries,” said the Russian scientist. The long-awaited event will become a reality after half a year.
