A protein affects the efficacy of breast cancer hormone therapy

A joint research team composed of institutions such as the University of Tokyo in Japan has discovered mechanisms that affect the efficacy and prognosis of hormone therapy in breast cancer.

Breast cancer with a female hormone receptor and no growth factor receptor, its cancer cells receive growth signals from estrogen, so anti-estrogen (SERM) such as tamoxifen is effective for this type of breast cancer. However, about 20% of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers are high-risk cases, and the effect of administering anti-estrogen agents is poor, and a poor prognosis may occur.

The team analyzed biopsy specimens and pathological specimens of breast cancer patients. Breast cancer with low Fbxo22 protein expression was resistant to antiestrogenic therapy and had a high recurrence rate. It was a high-risk breast cancer. This finding is expected to establish a diagnostic method using Fbxo22 as a marker to select treatments, and to develop new therapeutic methods targeting Fbxo22 protein expression.
