“In the remote areas where rheumatic, congenital and hypertensive heart diseases are more prevalent, but access to medical services is very limited, the B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) fingertip blood sampling test will help doctors identify children with severe illness. Professor Hu Dayi, chairman of the Chinese Medical Association Cardiovascular Branch, said that in May last year, researchers at the Peking University People's Hospital and the Chinese Red Cross team cooperated to identify children's congenital heart disease and adult late heart. The dysfunctional project underwent a one-year clinical study. Investigators visited five rural hospitals in Jiangxi, Hunan, and Anhui provinces, and issued notices to people in the surrounding communities. “The ALERT study has a milestone in many respects,†said Professor Hu Dayi, who showed that children and adults who may have severe heart disease can be identified by BNP alone—some of whom may be rescued by cardiac surgery. Moreover, studies have shown that in areas where it is often difficult to obtain advanced medical care, the use of a convenient fingertip BNP test can help identify which individuals should undergo echocardiography or undergo cardiac specialists.
