A trial funded by the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health showed that taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements did not improve dry eye symptoms, and the effect was no different from placebo. The research paper was published online on the 13th New England Journal of Medicine.

The study was conducted at 27 centers across the United States and recruited 535 patients with moderate to severe dry eye who have a history of more than 6 months. The researchers randomly selected 349 people to take 3 grams of fish omega-3 fatty acids daily, 5 capsules each time. The daily dose contains 2000 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 1000 mg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the highest dose ever used to treat dry eye. Of the 186 patients randomized to the placebo group, 5 grams of olive oil capsules were taken daily. Both groups of participants can continue to use drugs previously used to treat dry eye, such as artificial tears and prescription anti-inflammatory eye drops.

Symptoms reported by the patient were measured by baseline changes in the ocular surface disease index, which is a 100-point scale used to assess dry eye symptoms, with higher values representing a more severe degree. After 12 months, the mean symptom scores were improved in both groups, with an average symptom score of 13.9 in the omega-3 group and 12.5 in the placebo group. Overall, 61% of the omega-3 group and 54% of the control group had at least a 10 point improvement in symptom scores, but the differences between the groups were not statistically significant.

When clinicians used standardized tests (number of tears, corneal and conjunctival integrity) to assess signs of improvement in dry eye, no significant differences were found between the two groups.

The trial said the trial provides the most reliable and general evidence of omega-3 supplements used to treat dry eye, and the results suggest that omega-3 supplements are not suitable for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe dry eye. The effect is not much better than the placebo. (Reporter Feng Weidong)

Imported Plastic Additives

Plastic additives, also known as plastic additives, are compounds that must be added to polymers (synthetic resins) to improve their processing properties or to improve the properties of the resin itself. For example, in order to reduce the molding temperature of PVC resin, to make the product soft and added plasticizer; Another example is to add foaming agent in order to prepare light weight, anti - vibration, heat insulation, sound insulation foam plastics; The thermal decomposition temperature of some plastics is very close to the molding temperature, and the molding cannot be done without adding heat stabilizer. Therefore, the plastic assistant agent occupies a particularly important position in the plastic forming process. A class of auxiliary agents for plastic molding products, including plasticizer, heat stabilizer, antioxidant, light stabilizer, flame retardant, foaming agent, antistatic agent, mildew agent, colorant and whitening agent (see pigment), filler, coupling agent, lubricant, mold release agent and so on. Colorants, brighteners and fillers are not special plastics chemicals, but the general use of materials.
