A new study published in the American Journal of Pediatrics on the 15th showed that children who sleep less have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The study, led by St. George's College, University of London, UK, points out that too much or insufficient sleep has been shown to be associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults; for children, adequate sleep has been proven and low Obesity risk is related, but little is known about the association between sleep and type 2 diabetes.

To this end, the researchers analyzed data on more than 4,500 UK children aged 9 to 10, including height and weight data, blood test results, and sleep data from questionnaires.

The results of the study showed that these children sleep an average of 10.5 hours per night on school days, in line with the recommendation that school-age children sleep at least 10 hours a day. Overall, the longer the sleep, the lower the risk of diabetes. On average, for every hour of sleep, insulin resistance decreased by 2.9% and fasting blood glucose decreased by 0.24%. Insulin resistance is easy to cause type 2 diabetes.

Consistent with previous findings, children's long sleep time was associated with a low risk of obesity. During the study, the average body mass index decreased by 0.19 for an average of one hour. The body mass index is a common measure of fatness and thinness. It is calculated by dividing the body weight (kg) by the square of the height (m). In addition, the study did not find that children's sleep time is associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors such as blood lipids and blood pressure.

The researchers concluded that the sleep time of children is negatively correlated with the risk of type 2 diabetes, but the causal relationship remains to be further studied.

Christopher Owen, a professor at St. George's College, University of London, said: "These findings suggest that increasing sleep time may provide a simple way to reduce the risk of body fat and type 2 diabetes in early life." (Reporter Lin Xiaochun)
