Dehydration is the biggest challenge faced by piglets after weaning

After the piglet is weaned and transferred to the nursery, the first skill to learn is to drink water. However, due to transfer stress, unfamiliarity with the environment and companions, the time for first drinking in the nursery will be delayed. Dehydration caused by this condition will cause serious growth inhibition to piglets if they are not prevented or interfered. Dehydration, however, is the biggest challenge faced by piglets after weaning. A large amount of data shows that only 51% of weaned piglets can drink water within 25 hours of weaning.

70% of piglets' bodies consist of water, which is a very important nutrient for them. Therefore, keepers need to make every effort to ensure that weaned piglets drink and eat in time. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the intake of piglets and the amount of drinking water in the first few days after weaning. The fact that the piglets that eat and drink as early as possible after weaning proves to have better growth performance after 40 days and at the end of weaning.

So, how can we make weaned piglets drink water and eat it in time?

First, provide enough water

Theoretically, weaned piglets drink 0.3 gallons per pound of feed consumed, or we think the piglets average 0.7 gallons of water per day at weaning. To ensure that piglets drink enough water, at least every 10 piglets need to provide a drinker. In addition, water quality, temperature, and flow rate must be measured before feeding the piglets.

In addition to ensuring a sufficient number of drinking fountains, it is also necessary to ensure that the water flow rate is sufficient. In general, nursery pigs, growing pigs should maintain a 1 pint per minute flow rate, and finishing pigs should maintain a 1 quart per minute.

Second, take preventive measures when weaning

Since the new environment, peers, and crowded stress can lead to insufficient drinking water after weaning, the corresponding measures should be taken to solve this problem. Before the swarm, the piglets can be fed with electrolyte water to help them overcome this difficulty. Electrolytes can improve the growth performance of piglets several weeks after weaning. Supplementing nutritional ingredients such as sodium, chlorine, magnesium, vitamins, and acidifying agents can maintain the intestinal health of piglets and ensure that they can have significant effects on normal eating and drinking after weaning.

In one experiment, the effect of different drinking water on growth performance of piglets after weaning was compared. In the treatment group, electrolyte water was used to measure the drinking water volume of 3.748 L/24h; in the control group, ordinary water was used to determine the drinking water volume of 836 mL/24h. Therefore, it is necessary for pig farmers to provide electrolyte water on the 5th to 7th days after weaning. Only in the early weaning to ensure the quality of drinking water in order to better promote the later growth.

III. Preventive measures in other situations

Diseases and stress can also lead to dehydration. Swine production transit, disease, and vaccination can also lead to dehydration. One manifestation of piglet stress is diarrhea. Severe diarrhea can destroy the balance of electrolytes and water in piglets, further harm the small intestine villi, and ultimately reduce the digestion and absorption of piglets. In the case of stress diarrhea in piglets, supplemental electrolytes have a very good adjuvant effect. Because of the nutrients it provides, it can quickly help the piglet adjust the imbalance in the body and improve growth performance. In any case, it is very important to ensure adequate drinking water.
